Why didn't I think of this sooner?

"Live Event Painting" is becoming more and more popular around the country. A recent Southern Living magazine article featured an artist painting his interpretation of an outdoor wedding ceremony. This prompted a friend to give me a call and recruit my services at her daughter's upcoming wedding.

With my experience painting portraits and landscapes (en plein air) as well as months of painting at my church's contemporary service, I believe this will be a natural way to use my gifts. Also, I have a great appreciation for the beauty and significance of the wedding celebration having been the church wedding director for a couple of years.

The goal of this blog is to chronicle my experience with "Live Event Painting" and to inspire other artists to give it a try.

I welcome your feedback, questions, ideas, referrals, etc. as well as the opportunity to paint at your special event!

What's the procedure for using Gayle Hurley Live Event Painting?

1. Contact Gayle by email (gayle.hurley@gmail.com) or phone (205.529.9225) to check dates and discuss what kind of painting you'd like her to create.

2. Choose the scene you'd like to capture (the ceremony, the reception, interior, exterior, picnic, etc.). The painting can be started in one location and be completed at another (i.e., the reception) for the enjoyment of your guests.

3. Decide the size of the painting: from as small as 8 x 10 to as large as 24 x 30 and the medium: oil or acrylic.

4. A preliminary visit to the location or reference photos can help in planning the composition.

5. Depending on the size and complexity, the entire process of painting can be done in 3 to 5 hours.

As a plein air painter in oils, I've had LOTS of experience painting small paintings within a 2-3 hour time frame. One reason for the speed is that the light on my subject changes substantially over a two hour period. And because I am pressed for time, my canvas is usually on the small size (5x7, 8x10, 9x12).

Here are samples of some of my plein air work:

"Live Event Painting" is different in that I'll have a bit more time to plan the composition and do some preliminary sketches. However the actual live on-site painting part should take 3-5 hours depending on the painting's size, medium and amount of detail.

I adore painting portraits and striving to capture the essence of a particular personality. This is NOT the kind of people painting that will be done in Live Event Painting. In fact, I will probably struggle to keep the figures more simple while clearly conveying the attitude and appearance of my subjects.
